The Egyptian Society Mediators was established in January 2009 by Mrs Asmaa Hydes for the welfare of the native Egyptians, who live and work in Barnsley and the surrounding areas to be fully involved in the regeneration of Barnsley.  BESM is the offecial Egyptian cultural and educational community in Barnsley which provides information on Egypt and its culture, history, lifestyle and language.

BESM has been involved in Community activities with Egyptian and Arab groups from all over the UK. It runs Middle East women’s club, Egyptian coffee morning, Arabic & Egyptian language classes (click here for more details), Translation and Arabic Book Club to enable members to keep up with Egyptian &   Arabic culture and literature. BESM became a member of BBEMI in 2010. Membership of BESM is open to anyone who is intrested in Egypt and its culture regardless of their race, ethnicity or religion.

BESM Aims:

  • To introduce the Egyptian heritage and culture to Barnsley communities.
  • To provide recreational activities and social events to its community members.
  • To provide impartial advice, supporting, guiding and traning to its community members.
  • To provide information and advice on services that is mainly associated with Egyptian society.
  • To promote mutual friendship and cohesion within the local communities across the Barnsley Borough and among BBEMI communities.

Taste of Cultural Diversity 2010


Taste of Cultural Diversity event held on 26th of September 2010 in Barnsley Town Center. It’s a social event with Live Music, Dance and creative workshop as well as giving you the chance to taste food from the many different cultures that now call Barnsley home.

The Egyptian Coffee Morning 18th September 2010

The Egyptian Society Mediators BESM held an Egyptian Coffee Morning event on the 18th of September 2010 among gathering of Barnsley and BBEMI community members. The event was hosted by BESM Chairperson Mrs. Asmaa Hydes and it was officially inaugurated by The Worshipful Mayor of Barnsley Margaret Sheard.

Part of the event was also raising awareness for helping Pakistan flood victims and the devastated families and Children of Pakistan The event included traditional refreshments, music, lots of Egyptian memorabilia, and lots of photos were taken. The event was held extended over two hours and every one enjoyed it and wished BESM all the best with its forthcoming events.

The mayors parade 2010
The success of Barnsley 's Summer Carnival and Parade was matched only by the great weather, the crowds were also entertained by acts performing on stages around the town centre.

The event was entertained by live music, street theatre, children's entertainment; more than 2,000 people were presenting different communities and cultures.
