BBEMI Events

Along with its many other areas of work, BBEMI is also heavily involved with events management, not only for its members and their communities but also for the All Barnsley diversity Festival (ABDF). For the past two years, BBEMI has been a major contributor to the ABDF; sitting as a member of the steering group, organising events, supporting funding applications and supplying many of the volunteers that are needed to make the events happen.

Throughout the year, BBEMI, along with their member communities organise and host many of the cultural celebrations synonymous with the many backgrounds, races and ethnicities. These events hail from every corner of the globe and include such celebrations as Divali, Vaisakhi, Eid, Chinese Moon Festival, Chinese New Year, Pakistan Independence Day Sand the celebrations included under the banner of the ABDF such as, Satisfy My Soul, Diversity in Muslim Culture, Carnival de Barnsley, the BBEMI Sports Day, Bollywood Film Night and a Taste of Cultural Diversity.

BBEMI is also involved with many of the strategic and artistic bodies from around the borough, which are responsible for the provision and delivery of the creative arts in and around Barnsley. By remaining a major contributor to strategic, cultural and creative art forms in Barnsley BBEMI will continue to offer high quality and unique events to its clientele. With this diverse range of events under its collective belt, BBEMI is at the forefront of the Barnsley cultural events arena.

BBEMI EVENTS



Gypsy and Traveller conference
The BBEMI Gypsy and Traveller conference held on 19th January 2007, highlighted issues and prejudices faced by the Gypsy and Traveller communities.

These included: combating stereotypical views, racism, bullying in schools, human rights, accommodation needs and identifying areas of development for service provision.

Official Opening Smithies Community Learning Center
Official Opening Smithies Community Learning Center  - 10th May 2006

Local organisations and service providers were invited to the open day to promote their services following consultation with community representatives. Some of the activities provided included; dance and graffiti painting which was delivered by the Youth Participation Team.

Early Years activities were undertaken by the Cultural Diversity Team. Healthy Eating stall, Hand Massage, and Manicures were made available by the Health Visitor, PCT representatives and community members respectively.

Surestart and the Barnsley element of the South Yorkshire Fire Service also visited the site on the day. Younger community members enjoyed a bouncy castle and face painting.

The Mayors Parade 2007

The Mayors Parade held on 21st July 2007. The success of Barnsley ’s Summer Carnival and Parade was matched only by the great weather, as crowds flocked to the town centre on Saturday.

Around 15,000 people came to the event and were entertained by live music, street theatre, children's entertainment and a street parade of more than 1,000 people. People of all ages from many different organisations made up the walking parade.


Republic Day Celebrations
Republic Day Celebrations held on 27th January 2007, was a night of addresses from the Mayor and other guests by enjoying refreshments, music and dance.

Diwali Lights Switch
Diwali Lights Switch on 13th October 2006, was the formal ceremony for the switching on of the Diwali Lights in Barnsley Town Centre followed by refreshments at Jalsa restaurant.
